Speaker’s election fixed on Sept 13

SHILLONG, SEPT 9: Election of the new Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly will be held on September 13.

Announcing his decision in the Assembly here on Monday, deputy speaker Timothy D Shira said he has directed the Commissioner & Secretary of the Assembly to issue notice of the election.

He informed the filing of nomination papers by the candidates will be held on Tuesday and the scrutiny of nomination papers will also take place on the same day at 4.30 pm while withdrawal of candidature will be on September 11 till 3.30 pm.

“The voting will take place on September 13,” Shira said.

The election was necessitated after the death of Assembly Speaker and United Democratic Party chied late Dr Donkupar Roy on July 28.

The NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) has nominated UDP leader and cabinet minister Metbah Lyngdoh as the consensus candidate for the post while the opposition Congress will be fielding two-time legislator from Salmanpara Winnerson D Sangma.

The MDA comprising of six political parties, is having a strength of 40 in the 60-member House while the opposition with only 19.

Meanwhile, Lyngdoh told reporters that he would tender his resignation as tourism minister in the Conrad K Sangma-led cabinet before filing his nomination papers tomorrow.
