Spelling Bee competition improves spelling

Shillong, Sept 21: The Spelling Bee competition kicked off in Shillong with the American Center Kolkata hosting it for the first time in this city. Spelling Bee is a competition where contestants, usually children, are asked to spell words.

“Spelling Bee” originated in the United States and is now held in many countries around the world. Around 200 high school students from several local schools will be participating to win prizes. They will also have an opportunity to interact with the Director of American Center, Jeffrey K. Reneau.

The first All India American Center Spelling Bee started in 2007 in Kolkata. The Spelling Bee contest is one of the many opportunities to highlight people-to-people ties and the shared commitment towards education that distinguishes the US-India relationship.

In India too, the Indiaspellbee is a pioneer in conducting spelling competitions among students across major cities in India. The exercise recognizes the importance to create an awareness on spelling and pronouncing words correctly. The competition also encourages students to learn new words.

Learning and pronouncing words correctly become imperatives in today’s world when children are growing up surrounded by this new form of written communication like smses, twitters and facebook where the spelling are literally murdered. Therefore to keep the purity of spelling and pronunciation, such competitions will contribute to the learning.-By Our Reporter
