SSC meet on next DGP

SHILLONG, AUG 31: The state government is already in the process of zeroing down the names of eligible senior-most Indian Police Service (IPS) officers for appointing as a new full-fledged Director General of Police (DGP).The post of DGP in the state has been lying vacant for the past two months following the retirement of former DGP Rajiv Mehta on June 30. The decision was taken at the State Security Commission (SSC) headed by the chief minister Mukul Sangma, which sat on Wednesday. The meeting was attended by home minister HDR Lyngdoh, state chief secretary KS Kropha and the acting DGP SK Jain besides others.

“We have looked at the various other inputs pertaining to the names which will be made available before the SSC to zero down on the panel for consideration of the new regular DGP of the state,” Sangma told reporters.

When asked, he however said that the SSC has decided to direct the department to take up with the eligible IPS officers for indication of their willingness to serve for full term in the post as DGP of the state.

“Therefore in the first instance, all those available officers who are qualified as per the state police act should be given an opportunity to indicate their willingness,” the CM stated.

According to him, in the past experiences when the SSC had decided on the name for the DGP post and accordingly make the offer some officers decline to accept.

Meanwhile, the commission has also review the various issues relating to the internal security apparatus of the state vis-à-vis the law and order situation and overall response of the state security. The measures taken up as a follow-up action by the state police besides various activities of the different militant outfits operating in the state were also presented before the SSC, Sangma informed.-By Our Reporter
