Election department gears up for 2013 poll

Shillong, Sept 22:The state Election department convened a meeting Saturday at Hotel Pinewood of all the deputy commissioners of the eleven districts and sub divisional officers in Meghalaya as part of its preparation for holding of assembly election early next year.The assembly election slated within February 2013 has thrown the state election department into an overdrive as it is busy working out on a strategy, starting with the summary revision of the electoral roll that will commence on 1st October 2012 and also to get all the Indian citizens within eighteen years and above to get them enrolled in the electoral list.

Stating that this is the best opportunity to get enrolled, State Chief Electoral officer(CEO) P Naik said, “This time we will try and get as many people who will be eighteen years of age as of January 1st to register in the electoral roll.”

The state election department has embarked on wide publicity campaign for the potential voters to register themselves. It has also embarked on creating mass awareness for the booth level officers, colleges, headmen and community leaders including interested NGOs with the objective of making them aware of the importance of getting persons who are eighteen years of age as of 1st January 2013 to get themselves enrolled in the electoral roll, as well as for others to check that their names are in the electoral roll.-By Our Reporter
