SHILLONG, MAR 5: The state funeral of late Purno A Sangma, former Lok Sabha speaker, union minister and Meghalaya chief minister, will be held on Monday in Tura, district headquarter of West Garo hills.

Meghalaya chief secretary KS Kropha informed,  “In view of the sad demise of late Purno Agitok Sangma, it has been decided that the state funeral will be held at Tura, West Garo Hills District on March 7.”

Sangma passed away in his residence at New Delhi on Friday, after suffering from a heart attack.

The state legislative assembly has also adopted a resolution declaring seven days of state mourning as a mark of respect to the departed leader.

The assembly has also decided to adjourn the ongoing budget session on the day of the state funeral, to allow all the members of the house to pay their last respect to Sangma.

Meanwhile Congress national president Sonia Gandhi condole the sudden demise of Purno A Sangma and said in a letter to his daughter and former Lok Sabha MP Agatha Sangma,  “I am saddened to learn of the tragic passing away of your father, PA Sangma.”

Gandhi also said, “I am sure you will draw consolation from the fact that your father had a long, rich and full life, surrounded by a devoted family. I send my sincere condolences and feelings of empathy and support to you and other members of your family in this hour of grief.”

Condolence message continues to pour from different quarters of the state.

The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) has also expressed shocked at the sad news of Sangma’s passing away. Sangma was also the sitting member of parliament (MP) from Tura and has also served the state as the former Chief Minister.

“His demise is certainly a big loss not only to Meghalaya but also the north east region and the country as a whole,” FKJGP president Joe Marwein said while expressing condolences to the bereaved family.-By Our Reporter
