Shillong, Nov 22:The home department has listed 411 in Garo hills and 446 polling stations in Khasi, Jainita and Ri-Bhoi as “hypersensitive” and has asked for 100 companies of para-military forces for the upcoming 2013 February Assembly election from the Election Commission.
The requirement for 100 companies of the para-military forces was made during the meeting of the deputy Election Commissioner Aloke Shukla, home department officials and the Meghalaya police election in-charge Inspector General Vijay Kumar Wednesday in Shillong.
The request of the police for 100 para-military companies is double of what was deployed during the 2008 assembly election. A senior home department official told www.ohmeghalaya.com website that in 2008 assembly election around fifty companies of para-military forces were deployed in the State.
The police officer said that this time there is a heighten concern over the possibility of militants, either of the ANVC (B) or the GNLA, trying to play spoilsport during the election so the police department is not taking any chances and asking for adequate security forces to deal with such an eventuality.
The police officer said that the “hypersensitive” tag is given to the polling station located in a militant infested area or where there is a history of “booth capturing.”
The officer also informed that if the Election Commission of India agrees to deploy 100 companies of para-military forces during the election, most of the forces will be deployed to Garo hills areas where militancy is now at its peak.
The officer, however, said that the classification of “hypersensitive” might not remained constant as tomorrow another polling station might be perceive to fall under this classification. By Our Reporter
