State nodal cyber cell in place to deal with child pornography

SHILLONG, JUN 9: Meghalaya police has designated cyber assistance cell of CCW, CID, police headquarters as the state nodal cyber cell to deal with child pornography, rape and gang rape complaints received at the central online cyber crime reporting portal.

In a statement issued here on Saturday, special superintendent of police, CID R Muthu said that the state police have also specified two hotlines for the same viz 9402519391 and 0364-2504001.

One email ID ccw-meg@gov.in has also earmarked on which the citizens can lodge complaints if they come across any objectionable materials regarding child pornography, rape and gang rape videos.

According to the SP, the matters regarding videos of rape, gang rape and child pornography on the internet have become a serious concern of the society.

The step taken was following direction issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs to comply with the order of the Supreme Court on October last year.

These directions basically concern various areas such as for creating a central reporting mechanism for receiving complaints of child pornography, rape and gang rape content circultated through internet.

States have also been directed to make available helpline telephones to receive such complaints besides prompt blocking or removal of such contents on internet in addition to investigation of such complaints.

The Ministry of Home Affairs is developing a centralized online reporting platform.

Meanwhile, the state police also appeals to all citizens to cooperate with the state nodal cyber cell in this regard. Muthu has been nominated as nodal officer of the state to monitor such videos on the internet. His contact numbers are 9436709532 and 0364-2215701.
