State receives “C” in AIDS

Shillong, August 2: Meghalaya has been classified as “C” Category State as only 1.3 percent of the 63, 000 people who were tested for AIDS are HIV positive. This percentage is considered as low but, the Meghalaya AIDS Control Society project director Dr S Laloo has warned that the people must not be complacent.
Laloo told Oh! Meghalaya on Thursday, “Though Meghalaya has been classified as “C” category, but people must not be complacent and should remain vigilant as we are still vulnerable.” She informed that in 2011, of the 24, 000 people tested 337 of them were found to be positive.
Laloo said since 2002 of the 63, 000 people who were tested only 972 of them were found to be HIV positive. She agreed that according to the union health ministry categorization, Meghalaya is a “low prevalence State” as far as AIDS is concerned. But she felt that people should not be complacent about it as AIDS spreads like an epidemic and, therefore, there is a need to always be “alert.”
Ever since the Meghalaya AIDS Control Society launched the Mobile Integrated Counseling and Testing Centers (MICTC) in Shillong and Tura, the number of people tested has gone up significantly because of the accessibility to the people.
