State to bid for 2022 national games

SHILLONG, FEB 4: Happy and confident of the 12th South Asian Games 2016 success in Shillong, Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma said Meghalaya will bid for the 2022 National Games. He informed that he has advised all concerned department to prepare for the bidding.

Sangma broke this news at the sideline of the visit to the Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex and First Ground, Polo, on Thursday which will play host to several disciplines.

Shillong and Guwahati are co-host of the 12th South Asian Games 2016.

The games start tomorrow with archery and football getting the ball rolling.

Sangma said, “We hope to ensure that the South Asian Games helps us create positive stories and connect us with the rest of the world” adding “We must ensure that whoever are visiting from across these eight participating nations have the best time here and we are geared up to ensure that.”

Sangma also appreciated the enthusiasm shown by the volunteers and others working behind the scenes to make the 12th edition of the tournament a great success.

“I see that we are really prepared. Everybody is geared up and I see lots of excitement from the people preparing the venues. There is lots of positive energy flowing and the event is going to be a grand success. Shillong should set the benchmark for others,” Dr Sangma said.

On bidding  for the 2022 National Games, Sangma said,”We are preparing to bid to host the National Games as we look forward and prepare to celebrate the 50th year of our statehood, that’s in 2022.’

Sangma informed that he has advised all concerned departments and stakeholders, including the State Olympic Association, sports department and finance department to prepare for the bid.

“I am pretty sure that it will be befitting for the people of the state to prepare ourselves as a really capable and competent state,” Sangma said.- By Our Reporter
