Strict tenancy rules needed

SHILLONG, AUG 22: To put in a proper mechanism and stringent tenancy rules for renting out houses to tenants in their locality the Seng Samla Malki will be holding series of ‘awareness campaigns’ in and around Malki from September.  . SSM general secretary Junestar Kharbuli told reporters on Thursday that such measure and awareness campaign was needed as there have been complaints of house owners not only renting out houses but also showing leniency towards their tenants leading to unwanted activities.

Kharbuli said it is important to make people aware of having proper police verification, EPIC card, and academic certificates especially to those who have come from outside the state to establish their credential.  He said leniency shown by the house owners especially towards the students who comes from outside to study here has resulted in the latter leading a carefree lifestyles breaking the locality’s rules and regulation.

Clarifying that the SSM is not saying that the house owners should not rent out houses to outsiders, Kharbuli however said, “But we want to make them aware that while doing so, they should at least check the background of the tenant and ensure that they stay within the parameters of the locality’s rules and regulations.”

Kharbuli also said the house owners must first give preferences to the local residents.

SSM has also issued a strict warning to late night vehicle parkers especially at Nongmalki near Crinoline swimming pool saying that residents have expressed their concerns over late night parking as most of the time the occupants inside the vehicles are drinkers and create a sense of insecurity among the passer by.

Kharbuli warned, “If found, the SSM will hand them over to the police for legal action.”- By Our Reporter
