SHILLONG, DEC 13: Students’ fraternity under the North Eastern Hill University – Hostellers’ Welfare Committee (NEHU-HWC) on Friday threatened to close-down the office of the Dean Students’ Welfare (DSW) and Provost if Dean of Students’ Welfare Prof SN Sharan and Provost Prof DK Nayak for their alleged “inefficiency” if they are not removed immediately.
The decision came following the failure of the NEHU authority to listen to students and research scholars demand within the deadline of December 11.
The students have been demanding the removal of Sharan and Nayak after both had failed to address various grievances put up by the students.
“We would be compelled to close-down the office of the incumbent DSW and the provost, till they are removed from their posts,” NEHU-HWC vice chairman Atanu Banerjee told reporters at a news conference on Friday.
Banerjee said, “Students have also decided to ‘de-recognize’ the Dean and Provost if the authority concerned fails to pay heed to their demand.” He said they have also decided to write a no-confident letter to the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) besides others authorities concerned.
NEHU-HWC chairman Rusievan Shangpliang said, “The two officials have failed to perform their duties towards the welfare of the students which has led to series of agitations in the campus.”According to him, both the officials have fail to convene the general review meeting for the hostels, between the administration and the students as promised in the last general meeting held on August 23.
Shangpliang also alleged that the Dean and Provost have completely neglected to look into the recurring fellowship and scholarship problems faced by the students besides other many grievances. Over 200 research scholars were affected due to delay in releasing their fellowship and the Dean failure to take up their cases with the higher authority have agitated the students. It is also informed that recently the research scholars were forced to ceased their work and had to staged protest for two-days to demand actions.
The other issues cited by the students were failure of both the officials to carry out proper inspection into the conditions of hostels and welfare of the students.
Alleging that the officials have also abuse their powers, Banerjee said, “Instead of addressing the issues concerning the students, they have also started to harass the students either verbally or officially.” He said the students lost trust in the functioning of the Dean and Provost. – By Our Reporter
