Supply more Rs 500: EJNC

By Our Reporter

SHILLONG, JAN 20: The East Jaintia National Council (EJNC) on Friday expressed concern over shortage of smaller denomination, especially the new Rs 500, currency notes in Jaintia Hills region which it said has affected the people.  “The new currency note of Rs 500 continues to be in short supply because people are getting only of Rs 2000 note. This has caused immense hardship to the people,” the EJNC said in a statement.

The council demanded that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) address this current problem faced by the people post demonetization drive announced by the Centre government on November 8, last year.

“We urged the RBI to increase the circulation of Rs 500 in the market,” publicity secretary Allmiky Ryngkhlem said.

Meanwhile, the EJNC also condemned the recent protest against the demonetization drive by the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) in the RBI branch office in Shillong.

The council observed that the ruling Congress should have found out ways and means to address the problems faced by the people instead of protesting against the demonetization of old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes.
