Syiem quits PDF ahead of ADC polls

SHILLONG, DEC 24: People’s Democratic Front (PDF) will soon convene a meeting of its central executive committee to discuss on the sudden decision of the chairman and founding leader Pynshngain N Syiem to quit the party.

“The central executive committee will soon meet to discuss on the matter,” PDF chief Ivanlumlang Marbaniang told The Meghalaya Guardian overphone here on Monday.

Syiem, who is the former KHADC chief executive member and a former Mawsynram legislator, has decided to quit the party, which he floated after leaving the opposition Congress, on Sunday night.

In his letter submitted to Marbaniang, the sitting MDC said, “In order to avoid any internal unstoppable conflict which will disgrace the party’s image, I hereby tender my resignation from the post of chairman, spokesman and as a member of the party.”

Citing the reason for his decision, Syiem said, “….the party is not in need of my service any longer. This has come to light when I was sidelined from the party’s important meetings and affairs.”

Syiem also informed said that the meeting held on December 22 has also unanimously decided to dissolve the Mawsynram PDF Zonal Committee with immediate effect.

Asked, Marbaniang said that the party has officially received the resignation of the chairman today only and will take a call only after the meeting of the CEC is held.

The PDF while refusing to further comment on the matter said that people come and go but it will not affect the party.

The PDF was formed by Syiem before the 2018 Assembly polls. The party which is presently supporting the National People’s Party (NPP)-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government is having 4 MLAs in the 60-member House.

Meanwhile, Syiem is likely to join other political parties. Sources said the former MLA may join the ruling National People’s Party.
