SHILLONG, MAR 28: Thousands of aggrieved Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) teachers in Meghalaya pour out in city streets demanding speedy release of their five-month pending salaries and enhancement of the salary even as they threatened to ‘close-down’ all the schools if government fails to meet their demands within March 30.
The silent protest march of the SSA teachers started from Dhankheti and culminated at Malki ground on Thursday. A public meeting was also held.
“We demand that the government release our pending salaries within Saturday (March 30),” Meghalaya SSA School Association (MSSASA) president HM Marbaniang warned.
The delay in the release of salaries for the last five months has irk the teachers as they are struggling to make ends meet and manage the family forcing them to take to the street to protest against the indifferent attitude of the government.
Marbaniang told reporters after the meeting, “We have unanimously resolved to close-down all the SSA schools set up in the entire state if our dues are not clear within the stipulated time frame.”
Over 4000 teachers are teaching in more than 1000 SSA schools established in the 11 districts of Meghalaya.
Beside the release of their pending salaries, the SSA teachers have also been demanding for hike in their salaries from Rs 6000 to 12, 000 besides asking the government to regularize their posts. – By Our Reporter
