Teenage girl killed in militants’ crossfire

block 1TURA, FEB 3: In crossfire between two militant outfits – Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) and A’chik Songna An’pachakgipa Kotok (ASAK)- an ASAK militant and a teenage girl was killed Tuesday morning at Bolmoram Agalgre village under Songsak police station in East Garo hills.

The incident took place at around 6 am. The village is remote and is about 40 kms from Williamnagar, the district headquarter of East Garo hills.

Police said that the exchange of fire between the two outfits lasted for about 15 minutes. “In the gun battle between the outfits a cadre of ASAK was killed and another cadre of the outfit sustained injuries but managed to escape”, said East Garo hills SP Davies Marak.

Police say that four ASAK cadres were sheltered at the village since yesterday night. “This morning six GNLA cadres came to the village and attacked the ASAK cadres”, Marak added.

The GNLA cadres were from the Eastern Command.

A teenage girl who was caught in the cross fire and died has been identified as Manchi Marak, who is 19 years old. “By the time police team reached the spot the girl had lost her life. She received bullet injuries on her hand and back”, Marak informed.

Police have registered a case against the heinous act.

Locals say that the girl was washing utensils in a nearby stream when GNLA rebels attacked ASAK cadre at a temporary shelter of the rebels. “Hearing the gun shots, she fled towards the jungle and was hurt in the crossfire”, said a police official.- From Our Correspondent
