TURA, FEB 16: Meghalaya police on Tuesday rescued three Assam residents, abducted by militants yesterday from Emangre market, near Chokpot in South Garo Hills.

Police launched the counter insurgency operation based on source inputs with Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) commandos late yesterday. The operation continued till today morning.

At about 8:15 am, four armed militants were spotted with the victims at Radigre village.

“The militants fired at the approaching police team. In self-defence the police retaliated. During the brief exchange of fire, the militants managed to flee taking advantage of the thick forest and tough terrain. However the victims were rescued safely”, said IG (operations) GHP Raju.

Police recovered two demand notes of A’chik Matgrik Elite Force (AMEF) from the encounter spot. The victims have been identified as Soleman Ali, Monid Zamal and Abu Samad from Assam’s South Salmara – Mankachar district.- From Our Correspondent
