SHILLONG, FEB 18: Announcing that time for routine and casual approach is over in India, union minister of science and technology  Dr Harsh Vardhan strongly advocated the need to‘re-orient’ the country’s thinking on research work especially in the medical fields.

On his maiden visit to the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Health Institute and Medical Sciences (NEIGRHIMS) on Wednesday, Dr Vardhan felt there is a need to think afresh about the research in the medical fields.  He was of the opinion that laboratory and medical journal is of no use if it does not benefit mankind. He said such research will only have a “theoretical meaning”.

Dr Vardhan felt that “it is important for the new generation who have innovative ideas to think ‘out of the box’ to bring about change in the thinking process in the field of medical research.

Dr Vardhan said that first thing that needs to be done is to pin point the problems and then think what kind of technology is needed to sort out the problems.  He said it is high time for India as a country to show to the world a path where it can succeed in celebrating the health for all goal dreamt by the WHO in the 70’s.

Dr Vardhan said, “Only India has the capacity and potential to produce a model which is worth emulating. But it is the new generation who has to take up this responsibility now.”

Claiming that whatever research that is taking place today is being given to the rest of the world by India, Dr Vardhan said, “All the research being done by the great Indian scientist right from the 1st century is being translated to various other languages including Arabic and Europeans during the later stage.”

Addressing the doctors in the institute, Vardhan stressed, “We should have dream of making our present, our future better than the glorious past. We should try to re-invent ourselves and the young budding future doctor who should not think of getting a good car or a big bungalow but a dream which will make you an extraordinary doctor.”

Dr Vardhan said he  have a special connection with this institute (NEIGRIHMS) and former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee wanted to ensure that it gets the desired assistance and support to improve the health scenario in the north eastern region. – By Our Reporter
