SHILLONG, JUNE 26: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma on Wednesday said that a delegation of six legislators would be visiting different parts of Garo hills for restoring, maintaining and sustaining “peace” in the region in view of the recent incidents in West and South Garo hills districts even as he informed that the government had issued advisory to migrant labourers to move out of vulnerable areas.
Sangma told reporters after the meeting with the Garo hills MLAs the team of legislators will also be accompanied by the inter-faith forum and district administration to oversee peace activities and try to restore normalcy.
The members who are part of the delegation are includes parliamentary secretary of home Winnerson D Sangma, NPP legislator James K Sangma, R Marak , NR Marak and Saleng A Sangma.
The legislators meeting were firm on the the need to bring back normalcy in Garo hills after eight migrant labourers were killed in a remote mining village in South Garo Hills district Sunday night.
Sangma also informed that two ministers Zenith M Sangma and Clement Marak have already left on the tour of Garo Hills on Wednesday even as parliamentary secretary (Home) WD Sangma has been camping at Tura since Saturday.
Admitting that there has been no arrested in the case relating to the cold blooded murder of eight migrant labourers, Sangma ,however, assured that efforts are on to nab the perpetrators of the crime.
Sangma informed that the legislators meeting condemned the heinous crime and also resolve to jointly appeal to all citizens not to give it a communal colour. He said, “We also appeal to the public not to misuse the social media on the issue.” He said that the concerned authority has been asked to monitor on the social media and warned action would be taken against those engage in spreading rumours.
Sangma also informed that he, home minister and chief secretary are in constant touch with their counterpart in Assam for sustaining peace and normalcy. He said, “Our continuous engagement is important as anything that happens in border will have ramification on the two states.”
.Over 11,000 migrant workers have been evacuated to their place of origin in neighbouring Assam from two affected West Garo Hills and South Garo Hills districts.
Security has been beefed up in the plain belt, especially along the inter-state border with Assam. An additional company of BSF was deployed there.
