Training for poll volunteers held

TURA, APRIL 5: A district level training for poll volunteers was held today at district auditorium, Tura where more than 600 volunteers from leading youth organizations like Bharat Scouts and Giudes, NSS and NYK participated.

The session for Poll volunteers was delivered by Miss Aashna Chaprana, Campaign Manager from Josh Talks, a Media Company from New Delhi and works in collaboration with the Election Commission of India.

The session which focuses on the role of the poll volunteers on the actual polling day includes quiz and other electoral exercises. Further, the youths were also introduced to the origin of democracy and constitutional principles followed by their role as facilitators for people with disabilities, aged and infirm.

In his inaugural address, Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer, West Garo Hills Ram Singh said that this is the first time that poll volunteers were deployed for active duty in 481 polling station on the poll day in the district. Stressing on the importance of the tagline “Every vote Counts” and ethical voting, he urged them to be vigilant youth and citizens of the region and to encourage their parents, neighbours and friends to exercise their voting rights and select their representatives wisely. Further, he informed that the Election Commission of India desires everyone to vote and therefore is engaging the youth as poll volunteers along with Anganwadis to facilitate the Persons with Disabilities to vote and participate in the  electoral process and enrich our democracy.

Further, the Returning Officer to 2-Tura Parliamentary Constituency Ram Singh in the presence of Accessible Observer appointed by the Election Commission, I R Sangma, SVEEP Icon (PwD) Darlington Sangma released the Form 7 A- containing the List of contesting candidates embossed in Braille for facilitating the visually impaired persons in the district.

It may be mentioned that there are 110 visually impaired voters in 84 polling stations in the Assembly Constituencies of West Garo Hills District.
