Road cause of price rise

mukul sangmaSHILLONG, APR 8: In the absence of railway, road transportation adds to the rise of prices of essential commodities said chief minister Mukul Sangma during the debate on Governor’s address in the assembly on Monday.

Sangma said, “The state does not have a railway and has to depend on road transport to bring goods, including essential commodities, which contributed to price rise in the state.” He added cost of transportation add up to the prices of the commodities.

Sangma also felt that agriculture production in the country has not grown commensurate to the demand for food grains and agricultural products pushing the prices to shoot up.

Even as he said that the issue or price rise is a matter of concerns as it affects the poor, Sangma, however, assured numbers of measures have also been taken to deal with the issue.

Elaborating, Sangma said priority has been given to ensure timely supply of essential commodities under TPDS and the deputy commissioners and sub-divisional officers are ensuring that the PDS items are lifted on time from FCI to make these available to the consumers within the month of allocation.

Sangma said , “This is to reduce the pressure on the open market supplies and thereby helps to maintain the price line stable.

Sangma also informed that directions have been issued to all DCs and SDOs to conduct inspections and take stringent action against those involved in the diversion of TPDS foodgrains or hoarding to create artificial scarcity.

Lastly Sangma said that price monitoring committees have also been set up at the state and district levels to monitor the prices of essential commodities in the open market. – By Our Reporter
