SHILLONG, FEB 9: The Meghalaya Commercial Truck Owners and Operators Association (MCTOOA) blamed the state government for allegedly violating the rules of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) by forcing the coal trucks to illegally park along the NH-40 and 44.

“We blamed the state government because it has violated the rules and regulations of the NHAI, by making the trucks to park on the National Highway – 40 and 44,” MCTOOA president A Shanpru told reporters during a news conference on Monday.

Shanpru statement came after the vandalism on the Umling check gate in Ri Bhoi District by angry truck drivers, who protested against the delay in weighing their loads and said they had to wait for four-five days till their truck turn comes for weighing.

Shanpru alleged that the state government has not sought any permission from the NHAI to make the trucks park in the national highway stretching from Mookyndur-Jowai in Jaintia Hills, Shillong By Pass and Umsning-Nongpoh in Ri Bhoi District.

According to Shanpru if the state government wants to park the trucks on the road, it should have constructed proper infrastructures to avoid unnecessary traffic jams.  He asserted the no-entries put up by the government should have been right at the place from where the truck is supposed to move out.

The district administration of Ri Bhoi had blamed the delay in the weighing of the trucks on the truckers who they alleged overload their trucks.

Shanpru informed that the association has given clear instructions to all the truck owners to respect the order passed by the Supreme Court, which prohibits carrying more than 9 tons.” He however said, the absence of adequate number of weighbridges to cater to the thousands of trucks plying the National Highway is a major concern.

Shanpru felt the government must address this problem by setting up a good number of weighbridges. – By Our Reporter
