Tura update: Curfew relaxed for 7 hours

pravin-bakshiSHILLONG, JUNE 23: Curfew has been relaxed for seven hours from 9 am to 5 pm on Sunday in the entire West Garo hills district to enable the residents to go to Sunday service as most of the people are Christian belonging to different denomination. The decision to relax curfew for seven hours was taken in a meeting held between the West Garo hills deputy commissioner Pravin Bakshi and the police officers.

Bakshi told this website after his Sunday morning review meeting, “The decision for seven hours curfew relaxation was taken after I held a review meeting with my officers and the police department today morning.” He said besides allowing the faithful to go to their Sunday service the people can also buy their provisions in case they have exhausted their rations.

Baksh said that unlike Saturday curfew relaxation, the relaxation on Sunday will be applicable in the entire West Garo hills district. He also said during the two consecutive nights after imposition of curfew – Friday and Saturday- not a single untoward incident has been reported from any corner of the district.

Curfew was clamped in the entire West Garo hills district after mob frenzy in Tura when news circulated that five migrant labourers had molested an eighteen years old mentally challenged girl in Wadangere. The mob went on a rampage torching vehicles and one person was also killed in the incident.

The district administration immediately clamped curfew on Friday night to control the violence from spreading and escalating in other areas. Migrant labourers working in Tura and other areas of the West Garo hills district started fleeing from Saturday onwards to their home towns.

The district administration has also tighten security and round the clock vigil in Tura and other areas of the district with the help of the para-military forces including the BSF  along with the state police.

Bakshi also had held a peace meeting on Saturday where the Mothers’ Union, church leaders, local MLA and the youths had attended. After the meeting everybody condemned the molestation, the mob carnage and also appealed to every section of the society to ensure that peace and harmony returns back in the district. – By Our Reporter
