SHILLONG, NOV 23:  The Khasi Students’ Union – South West Khasi Hills Unit (KSU-SWKH) announced two-day night-road blockade from November 27 to protest against the state government’s failure to restore major road project in the region.

The night road blockade will be effective in South West Khasi Hills and parts of East Khasi hills from 7pm of November 27 and would end at 5 am of November 29 the union’s general secretary Forwardman Nongrem informed.

Nongrum  said the decision to call the blockade was taken after the state government failed to respond to the demand of the people of the region and the union on the need to restore the Weiloi – Rangblang road, which was dropped by the chief minister.

The 40 kilometer road from Weiloi to Rangblang was slated to be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 27 crore and is one of the 45 projects under Non Lapsable Central Pool of Resources (NLCPR) which was dropped last year based on the recommendation of the chief minister during the 118thmeeting of NLCPR committee.

“We strongly oppose this decision of the government in one of the backward district in the state,” union president Kitboklang Syiemlieh said.

“We cannot digest this impartial attitude of the government to take away what has been fixed to be given to us in this way,” Syiemlieh said adding that the union is still in the dark as to what made the government to drop the project.

Meanwhile, the KSU has also decided to intensify its stir against the state government till its demand is achieved.  It appealed to the people of the district to support and cooperate with the union on this issue.-By Our Reporter
