Two GNLA militants gunned down

Shillong, Oct 25: Two hardcore Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants were shot dead by the police Thursday morning at Watregittim village in South Garo hill district. The two slain militants have been identified as Rengchang Ch Marak and Subarthapa N Marak.

The two militants were gun down in an encounter that took
place for about 20 minutes at Watregittim village in the South Garo Hills district at about
5:30 am.

Police said that the militants opened fire after they noticed that a police team and the Swift Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) commandos, who were combing the area, closing gradually towards their hide out.

The security forces were combing the area after the militant group led by their area commander Rakam tried to abduct three merchants on October 24.
As the militants open fire the security team retaliated killing Rengchang Ch Marak and Subarthapa N Marak.

An AK series rifle, two pistols, a mobile phone and a grenade were recovered seized from the site of the incident. The two militants who were killed are reportedly involved in an attempt to abduct of three merchants from  Jadi village, but the police foiled the militants’ plan through timely intervention.

Meanwhile, the three road engineers   Manoj Kumar, Deepak Kumar and AK Sharma who were abducted on October 21 by the GNLA were released unharmed. The engineers of a Hyderabad-based road construction company based in East Garo Hills
were abducted from Dambu Aga Reserve Forest at gunpoint by a group of heavily armed GNLA rebels.

However, all the three engineers were released unharmed on October 23. They had to walk five kilometers from Maiwang village on the Mangsang-Ronjeng road. The three engineers boarded a public transports up to Rongjeng from where their company vehicle picked them up to an unknown destination.- By Our Reporter
