SHILLONG, JUNE 6: The opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) has firm up its decision of not leaving the demand for imposition of President’s Rule in the state just within the precinct of the assembly, but take it further by meeting prime minister Narendra Modi and union home minister Rajnath Singh and urge them to dismiss the Mukul Sangma led Congress led government, impose central rule and call for fresh assembly elections.

Decision to meet Modi and Singh was taken during the UDP central executive committee meeting held immediately after the reassembled budget session of the Meghalaya assembly on Friday.

The demand for central rule, dismissal of the Congress led government in Meghalaya and calling for fresh elections have been made by the UDP in the wake of the deteriorating law and order situation in five districts of Garo hills region.

UDP president Donkupar Roy told reporters after the party’s CEC meeting, “We are going to meet the Prime Minister and the Home Minister after the re-assembled budget session to push our demands because of the compulsions that emanated from the type of situation prevailing in Garo Hills region.”

Opposition, including UDP, had earlier during the assembly session demanded the imposition of President’s Rule in the state to pave way for peace to prevail in Garo Hills region.

Roy said that the UDP demand will also stretch to the point of asking the dismissal of that the state government led by Mukul Sangam and calling for fresh elections in order to establish a government that can reign in the terror activities in Garo hills.

Stating that situation in Garo hills has gone from bad to worse, Rocky Marak, UDP leader from Garo hills said, “It has become difficult to the extent that nobody dares to venture out after 7pm and this is one indication on how the Congress led government has failed to provide security and safety to the public.”

Pointing to the worsening of the law and order scenario in Garo hills, Marak informed that even the deputy Commissioner of South Garo hills district had been attacked thrice in the past few months. He said one can imagine what type of insecurity the common man is facing under such form of government.

Roy also said that the UDP don’t see any solution in sight to the problems in Garo hills except dismissal of the Congress led government and imposition of President Rule.

Answering a query on whether the UDP sense an opportunity because the BJP government is ruling at the center and if the demand for central rule is not vindictive politics Roy dismissed it by saying, “Our demands is out of compulsion and has nothing to do with political vendetta.”- By Our Reporter
