UDP to form next govt : Paul

Paul LyngdohSHILLONG, JAN 21: Hoping to cash on the division within the Congress, United Democratic Party (UDP) working president Paul Lyngdoh claims that his party will be forming the next government as it is likely to get a single party majority after the February 23 assembly polls. He said the Congress is a “divided house” and this will benefit the UDP in most of the constituencies.

Announcing the name of two party candidates- MDC Obil Kyndait for Khliehriat constituency and former MeCEL engineer Highlander Kharmalki for Mawryngkneng constituency- on Monday, Lyngdoh said the UDP is inching towards forming the next government as it is gaining electoral grounds in constituencies where the Congress is a divided house.

Lyngdoh said, “There is division within the Congress in several constituencies will be a plus point for the UDP.”  He informed the UDP is going to polls as a united entity.

Lyngdoh, however, said the UDP will not make tall claims as the party does not want to prejudge the electorates even as he added that there is an electoral swing in the several constituencies Khasi – Jaintia and Garo hills in favour of the party.

In 2008 elections, the party bagged ten out of sixty seats.

Lyngdoh said the UDP will be contesting in all the constituencies in Khasi and Jaintia hills except in one constituency in Jaintia hills district, as for Garo hills he added that the party will contest fourteen of the twenty-four seats.

The UDP has so far announced forty-six names for the upcoming February 23 elections.- By Our Reporter
