UDP to walk alone

SHILLONG, DEC 10: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has decided to have no truck with any alliance and instead fight the 2013 Assembly elections on its own.

The decision to walk the lone march was taken by the central executive committee (CEC) of the party, which met here today. The UDP expressed the confidence that it would be able to form the government on its own. “We felt that we need not go with any alliance in the ensuing elections… The main reason being we have already been able to finalize our candidates from almost all the constituencies in the state,” said UDP president, Dr. Donkupar Roy.

The decision of the UDP puts to rest all speculation about new alignment of forces in the state. The UDP, of course, is the key ally in the Congress-led coalition government headed by chief minister, Dr Mukul Sangma. The Congress, too, has in the recent past expressed the confidence of forming the government on its own, and had even refused alliance overtures from the NCP with which it is alliance at the Centre.

Like the Congress, UDP, too, had been approached for a pre-poll alliance by the newly-formed Nationalist People’s Party (NPP) of former chief minister Purno Sangma.
