Umroi Airport: HC summons director, survey of India

SHILLONG, AUG 6: The Meghalaya High Court has summoned the Director, Survey of India on August 20, in connection with the matter of feasibility for landing of bigger aircrafts at the Umroi airport.

In its order passed here on Tuesday, the division bench comprising of the Chief Justice Ajay Kumar Mittal and Justice HS Thangkhiew said, “TP Mallik, Director, Survey of India shall remain present in the Court on the next date of hearing (fixed to be held on August 20).”

Rajesh Ranjan, Deputy Superintending Surveyor, Survey of India, Shillong who was present during the hearing informed that Mallik posted at Shillong is attending an international meet and he is unable to attend the Court today, however, he will be present on the next date of hearing.

However, Amicus Curiae P Yobin and counsel K Paul suggested that a panel of technical persons be appointed to constitute the Committee to examine the various obstacles which according to Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and Airport Authority of India (AAI) are coming in the way of granting permission for landing of Turbojet and Airbus at Umroi Airport.

The counsel for the parties stated that a list of the panel of technical persons shall be furnished on the next date of hearing.

Meanwhile, S Thapa, counsel appearing for Air India informed that certain incentives which were available to the Air Alliance while operating the flights from Kolkata to Shillong have been withdrawn and according to his instructions these incentives have now been granted to Indigo Airlines under Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS). He prays for time to file an appropriate affidavit.
