SHILLONG, MAY 31: A unique “calendar for 300 years from the year 1800-2100” invented for the first time ever by an indigenous Khasi academician Late Peter Wahlang was republished and released on Tuesday.

Late Wahlang, a former headmaster Khasi Pnar Academy Shillong was also termed as an unsung hero of the Khasis, whose work never got the right kind of recognition, said the Maitshaphrang Movement convener Michael Syiem.

Syiem said, “The aim of Maitshaphrang in republishing this calendar is to bring out unsung heroes so that this becomes an inspiration to the future generation to go ahead and make use of their talents.”  For the third consecutive time that the calendar invented by Wahlang was republished after it was first published in the year 1959 and re-printed in 1992.

It was in the year 2000, the calendar was sent to Amadou B Guisse, PhD, Department of Mathematics at Kutztown, Pennsylvania for a thorough research.

Stating in an attempt to dig deep into the mathematical wizardry, Syiem said, “Maitshaphrang sent the works of Wahlang to a professor of the history of Mathematics, Amadou B. Guisse, Kutztown University who took 3 years to study the calendar.”

“The study by the university revealed that Wahlang appears to have developed the calendar originally and the research declared it to be a very unique invention not existed anywhere,” he added.

According to him, comparing the calendar developed by Peter Wahlang to the mathematical formulation and to the existing algorithms proves its uniqueness and its originatliy. He also added that the report by Guisse states that it is evident from observation that Peter Wahlang’s calendar does not follow this linear formulation.

“I knew that his was a genius invention because in this calendar even the leap year was also calculated,” Syiem said that re-publishing of the calendar is to also let know that a genius had once live among us.

The calendar was sold only at Rs 0.50 paisa when it was first published. However, the calendar did not get any appreciation when over 10, 000 copies was distributed to the various schools, colleges and university in the year 1992, he said.

Meanwhile, the Maitshaphrang said that it is contemplating to send the unique calendar to the department of Maths of NEHU for more research to ensure it gets further recognition.-By Our Reporter
