Vaccination to dogs in GH

TURA, APR 21: The veterinary officials in Garo hills are gearing to celebrate the World Veterinary Day on April 25. To mark the occasion two-day free anti-rabies vaccination will be provided to dogs at the state Veterinary dispensary in Tura.

The drive will begin on April 24. The vaccination will be held between 8 to 11 am.

Meghalaya Veterinary Services Association (Garo hills chapter) has urged public to turn up with their dogs for the free vaccination drive.  On April 25, the veterinarians will hold a programme at SMELC building Dakopgre to create awareness on this year’s theme — Vector borne diseases with a zoonotic potential.

The objective is to create awareness on diseases of animals that can be transmitted to human.

A global report on rabies has found India accounts for more than one-third of all death due to dog bite worldwide. Most victims die at home because hospitalization provides little palliative care and death is inevitable.

A study by Global Alliance for Rabies Control’s Partners for Rabies Prevention Group (released on April 16) shows that annual economic losses because of the disease is alarmingly high. Even though the disease is preventable, the study says that around 59,000 people die every year of rabies transmitted by dogs globally.

In India, at least 20000 people die every year due to canine rabies.

“Rabies is close to 100% fatal, but it is also almost 100% preventable, and the best, most cost-effective way of preventing canine rabies is by vaccinating dogs.” a senior veterinary doctor said.- By Our Reporter
