Land donated to NEHU

SHILLONG, JAN 8: The  Wahiajer village, located about 5 km away from Jowai in West Jaintia hills district, has decided to donate over 6 hectare of land to the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) for the setting up of its permanent campus in the district.

The village decided to donate the land after t the behest of the Meghalaya People United Front (MPUF) which is from the area, on June last year.

The village dorbar of Wahiajer, about 5 km from Jowai, the headquarter of the district has accepted the proposal of the organization recently,The MPUF president D Wanmi Laloo told reporters at a news conference on Wednesday that the Wahiajer village accepted the proposal and according decided to  give land for setting up NEHU permanent campus in the district.

Laloo said with the land coming in free  the dream to have the NEHU campus, which is a long pending demand of the people of the district, is fulfilled.

NEHU has permanent campuses in Shillong, and Tura to cater to the educational needs odf the youths of the state and north eastern state.

Laloo said if NEHU has a campus in Wahiajer, people from the West and East Jaintia hills districts will have easy access to academic studies as well as employment avenues. He said, “We would continue to pursue the matter with the authorities concerned including NEHU and state government to ensure that the dreams to have the campus is fulfilled at the earliest.”

The MPUF has also sought the intervention of MP Vincent H Pala into the matter. Laloo said, “We had submitted a representation to the MP on June 14, last year.” The MPUF has urged concerned authorities to speed up implementation of the NEHU project.- By Our Reporter
