Wahktieh murder case: SIT recovers knife used in killing 2 children

SHILLONG, JUN 1: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Wednesday recovered the knife used by the accused father in the killing of his two children at Wahktieh forest, Nongrah.

The SIT, headed by a Deputy Superintendent of Police (Crime) and is being supervised by the Superintendent of Police (City), was constituted immediately after the FIR was lodged into the murder case.

29-year-old Jefferson Jana was arrested from his residence on Tuesday night, just hours after the bodies of his two children, aged 4 and 2 years old, were recovered from the Wahktieh forest.

He has been booked under section 364 and 302 for abduction and committing murder.

Speaking to reporters, SP (City) Vivek Syiem informed that the police team had gone today to the place of occurrence.

“On his (Jana) leading, the team had recovered the knife (used by him to slit the throat of his children),” he said.

Syiem said the accused will be produced before the court once his RT-PCR report comes out while informing that they are seeking 7 days police custody.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the heinous crime was committed out of vengeance.

When asked, the SP said that the accused has confessed that he has committed the crime.

“He (Jana) revealed that there were some problems between him and his wife. According to him, he wants to go back to his wife but she rejected as she wants to separate because he was an alcoholic and he just came out of a rehabilitation center,” he said.

“We have just started the investigation. The reason he committed the crime was because he was angry and he wanted to take out vengeance,” he added.

According to the SP, there could be so many factors but that will be investigated upon by the SIT.

Whether the accused is mentally stable, Syiem said that the police will have to verify his rehab details.
