WGH admin issues order prohibiting displaying of flags, banners

In view of the announcement of holding General Election to the Lok Sabha, 2024 and the date of Poll is fixed on 19th April, 2024 and that the Model Code of Conduct has come into immediate effect from the date of announcement of Election, the District Magistrate West Garo Hills has issued an Order under Section 144 Cr PC prohibiting wall writing, pasting of posters or papers or defacement in any other form or erecting or displaying of cut-outs, hoarding, banners, flags, etc on any Government premises.

Further, the order also prohibits displaying of flags and banners in private premises except with voluntary written permission of the occupant or owner and displaying of flags and stickers in private vehicle. In case the owner of the vehicle on his own volition decides to display flag/stickers etc, they should not cause any inconvenience or distraction to other road users. If such display of flags and stickers aims to solicit vote for any particular candidate, then the provisions of Section 171H of the IPC would be attracted, the order stated.

The order also prohibits display of flag, sticker etc, on commercial vehicle unless such vehicle is a vehicle validly used for election campaign after obtaining the requisite permit from the District Election Officer or Returning Officer and the display thereof in original on the wind screen.

Moreover, the order also prohibits carrying of any type of arms and explosives in the entire District of West Garo Hills till the election process is over. However, this order shall not apply to law enforcing authorities such as police personnel, Home Guards, Forest Personnel, BSF and CPMF personnel.

This order will come into force with immediate effect and remain so until further orders.
