SHILLONG, MAR 13: As the new MUA II coalition government headed by Mukul Sangma is now in place, everyone’s is waiting to see what will be the fate of the Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) Prem Singh who was appointed by the Election Commission of India (ECI) after removing Kulbir Kishan to ensure a free and fair election.

According to a top home department official the decision whether to continue with Prem Singh as the state DGP will be purely a “political decision.” He told this website, “There is no precedence earlier on this issue as the home department does not have any record of the DGP being removed by the ECI in the state.”

The official said that the decision of whether to continue or replace Prem Singh, who was appointed by the ECI, will have to be a political decision.

Kishan was appointed by the previous government of chief minister Mukul Sangma just before the election. However, Kishan tenure as the DGP was short lived as the ECI removed him after receiving complaints from political parties, politicians and public that election under him might not be free and fair.

The ECI zeroed down on Prem Singh who is known for his integrity and honesty as a police officer. But now that the election is over and the new government under the same chief minister is in place, everybody in the corridor of power are waiting to see what the new government will do in this regard as Kulbir Kishan was the appointee of the previous government headed by the same chief minister.

However it may be noted before the appointment of Kishan, the State Security Council (SSC) headed by the chief minister had also approached Prem Singh for the top cop job but the latter refused to take the offer. Left with no option, the SSC then appointed Kishan as the new DGP.- By Our Reporter
