Williamnagar jail killings

ardent1SHILLONG, APR 11: Meghalaya home minister Roshan Warjri told the assembly on Thursday that the government is taking the killings of the two Williamnagar jail officials very seriously and police is looking for those responsible for gunning them down on the night of February 2.

Warjri was responding to a call attention motion tabled by HSPDP legislator Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit. She said, “A case has been registered, and investigation is on, and all efforts are being made to arrest the perpetrators of the crime.”

On that fateful night, “unidentified” armed men shot dead assistant jailor Neil Warjri at the premises of the Williamnagar district jail while warder Sharai Sing Thabah succumbed to his injuries.

From the place of occurrence, police recovered 13 empty cases of 7.62 mm AK-47 Rifle ammunition, one empty case of Chinese Rifle ammunition and one empty case of 7.65 mm pistol ammunition, she added.

Even as Warjri informed that the government had given Rs one lakh as ex-gratia payment to the families of the deceased, she said the magisterial enquiry instituted to probe the incident is completed and a report has been sent to the state government by the East Garo Hills deputy commissioner.

Soon after the incident, the district administration had alleged that militants of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) were responsible for the attack only to retract by saying that it was the ANVC(B) who was responsible for attacking and killings the two officials of the Williamnagar jail.- By Our Reporter
