Shillong, December 16: The thirteen pro Inner Line Permit (ILP) ngos have suspended their ‘agitations’ demanding for implementation of the 140 year old Eastern Bengal Frontier Regulation Act, 1873 to contain unabated illegal influx into the state in view of the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebration.
“We have unanimously decided to suspend all our agitational programmes to ensure that the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations in the state are celebrated in pomp and gaiety, peace and tranquility,” Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) general secretary Auguster Jyrwa said in a statement issued on Monday.
Jyrwa, however, informed that the conglomerate of thirteen pro-ILP ngos will announce their fresh agitations in the first week of January next year as a part the pressure on the state government to implement the ILP in the state.”
Jyrwa said, “We will sit and chalk out our plan of action to further intensify our stir and accordingly announce the agitation in the first week of January.”
The ngos have vowed to take the movement for demanding the implementation of the Eastern Bengal Frontier Regulation Act, 1873, which they felt is a strong and effective law that can prevent illegal influx from entering the state, to its logical end, Jyrwa informed.
Appreciating the public for their support during the three month agitations, Jyrwa said the ngos put on record their sincere gratitude to all the citizens who have supported the demand for ILP which will protect the people, the land and its resources. He further added, “We appeal for the same kind of support in the coming days till we achieved our demand.”
With the Christmas festive already setting in, Jyrwa hoped that through this festive season, the state government will also change its attitude and instead listen to the voice of the majority by implementing the ILP in the state.- By Our Reporter
