“Workless” culture of employees’ irk an officer

Shillong, Nov 28: Bandh, picketing and even “restricted holidays” have become a sought after occasion to some state government employees to stay away from work giving a glimpse of a work culture that has become a way of life to most government employees in Meghalaya.

On Wednesday the occasion of the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, the state government had classified the day as “restricted holiday” so that employees belong to the Sikh faith can celebrate the occasion.

However a senior officer was fuming as somet of his staff who were all Christian had availed the “restricted holiday” leaving the officer to work alone. He said, “What they have to do with Guru Nanak birthday I cannot understand, they just want an excuse to stay at home.”

Government offices in Shillong, and most parts of the state always and almost remain close if there is any bandh or office picketing even if there are no volunteers to enforcing the bandh as the employees just want to stay home. –By Our Reporter
