SHILLONG,JULY 15 :  Meghalaya State Child Protection Society & the District Child Protection Unit, Social Welfare Department organized a two day State Level Workshop on Child Rights, Child Protection, Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) Act, 2000 and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (POCSO Act) at State Convention Hall which was inaugurated by Social Welfare minister Deborah C Marak as the chief guest.

Addressing the Social Welfare officials, child activists, members of various  ngos, officials from line departments from different districts and students and teachers who attended the workshop, Marak said that the journey in the life cycle of a child involves the critical components of child survival, child development and child protection.

She said that it is the basic right of every child to be born in a safe and nondiscriminatory environment and grow through the formative years of life in a healthy and dignified way. Marak said that child protection is the need of the hour and concerns all. She hoped the workshop will be meaningful and helpful and participants will get proper training and knowledge to reach out to the affected effectively.

Marak also informed that in Meghalaya there is an increasing trend of crimes committed by children living in the streets and children of broken families, the bulk of these cases being thefts, robbery, intimidation and assault. Reiterating on these crimes committed by juveniles, she stated that this issue need a proactive approach right from the policy making decision to society as a whole. The involvement of all ngo stakeholders is essential to bring about change to reduce vulnerabilities of children, to strengthen the protective role of families and communities, to promote meaningful child participation and to have better child protection services, she added.

Earlier, Social Welfare director  HM Shangliang informed that the workshop is being organized to sensitize the members of Child Welfare Committee, Juvenile Justice Board, Special Juvenile Police Unit, Print and Electronic Media Child Care Institutions, District Programme Officers, District Social Welfare Officers, ngos and other line departments on child rights for better functioning of child protection services to reduce vulnerabilities and enable them to function professionally and effectively.

The two day workshop will discuss various topics on Rights of Children, Juvenile Justice (Care & Protection of Children) Act, 2000 as amended in 2006 & 2011, Situational Analysis of Children in India, Understanding Child Psychology, National Tracking System for Missing and Vulnerable Children, Adoption and its Legal Procedure, Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012  by resource persons from NIPCCD, Guwahati, Childline, Shillong, Reach Shillong Ministry, Sanker, Shillong, CARA, Delhi, NIC, Shillong and State Commission for Protection of Child Rights.

The Inaugural function was also attended by PW Ingty, Principal Secretary, Social Welfare, Commissioner & Secretary, Social Welfare, T Dkhar and representative of NIPCCD, Guwahati, G Thapa.- By Our Reporter
