‘Zero tolerance on ultras’

SHILLONG,SEPT 17: Asking the state government to show ‘zero tolerance’ towards militants, HSPHP legislator Witting Mawsor said the government should not wait till militants attack the secretariat to against the “barbaric acts” of militant outfits.

Mawsor, who represents Mawshynrut constituency, said militants are using West Khasi hills, South West Khasi hills and parts of Ri Bhoi as safe haven to get away from the heat of combing operations in the Shallang area of West Khasi Hills during a call attention motion.  He said,  “The militants are freely moving around brandishing sophisticated weapons and terrorising the public.”

Mawsor felt that the security forces must conduct operations against militants in West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills and parts of Ri Bhoi district.  He also suggested setting up of police outposts in Riangmaw, Riangderm, Japung and Langdongdai, which are militant-affected areas.

Mawsor felt police personnel should also be equipped with sophisticated arms to take on the militants. He called on the government to have a “clear understanding” with neighbouring states and countries in order to fight militants.

Mawsor thundered on Thursday during the ongoing assembly session, “Do not wait until the militants attack the secretariat, Assembly and other important offices. Time is not too far for these things to happen in the state if the government is not ready.”

Home minister Roshan Warjri apprised the assembly that areas under Shallang police station are infested with militant outfits such as the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) and A’chik Matgrik Elite Force (AMEF) who are operating in the areas.

During the course of her reply Warjri said, “To counter the activities of the GNLA and other militant outfits, government has worked out various strategies and measures which are being adopted by the state police and these measures have yielded good results.”

Warjri informed that the government is  adopting “zero tolerance” towards militancy with intensive counter insurgency operations in the militancy-affected areas including long and short range patrols, raids on militants and prosecuting the harbourers and sympathisers of terrorist and banned outfits are being conducted regularly.

Warjri informed that domination of strategic villages and locations are done as part of anti-insurgency operations denying the outfits of the opportunity to indulge in their criminal and anti-national activities. She, however, said that surrender of militants  who are willing to give up violence and rejoin society was being encouraged.

Warjri said, “The cadres who surrendered in 2014 was 57 while since January 2015, 40 cadres have surrendered.”- By Our Reporter
