SHILLONG, NOV 25: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is all set to review cases related to human rights violations in context of public and private health care services in Meghalaya and other north eastern states on February next year.
The review will be done through series of public hearing on health rights, the feedback of which will go a long way in framing the health policy of the country.
Announcing this on Wednesday, Co-Ordinator of the Campaign for People’s Rights to Health in Meghalaya (CPRHM) Phrangsngi Pyrtuh said, “The public hearing will be organized in collaboration with the Jan Swasthya Abhiyan (JSA), with the objective of drawing attention to systematic and policy related issues and issuing a range of related recommendations comprehensively, which would help in adopting measures required to ensure protection of health rights.”
“This is an opportunity for expressing against any health care service providers for people in the state of Meghalaya, if they feel there is some violation in their rights to health,” Pyrtuh said. According to him, the proposed public hearing will be held in Guwahati, tentatively by February 19 or 20.
Appealing to people who have grievances to come forward and participate in the public hearing, the co-ordinator said, “Before this, we also have to do lots of things especially preparing document of certain cases related to health rights.”
“We appeal to people to come forward and register their complaints with the CPRHM, which will help in facilitating the documentation of the complaints to be submitted to the NHRC,” he said.
When asked, Pyrtuh said that definitely the feedback received from such public hearings will be send as recommendation for framing the new Health Policy, adding “This will go along way in framing the health policy of the country.”
According to him, the exercise is the second after the first public hearing conducted in 2003.
