Govt to soon meet 3 ADCs over 6th Schedule

SHILLONG, APR 25: The state government will soon convene a meeting with the three autonomous district councils (ADCs) before taking a final decision on the proposed amendment to the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

Informing this on Tuesday, Deputy Chief Minister in-charge District Council Affairs Prestone Tynsong said, “Very soon, we are going to sit down again with them and then the final draft of the amendment will be sent to the Government of India through the Ministry of Home Affairs.”

Stating that the amendment is in the final stage, Tynsong said, “That is why I requested the CEM of KHADC to have a meeting amongst themselves meaning all the three district councils and to also give us some kind of recommendations which are the clauses as right now the village council we really have a problem and number two unrepresented tribes which that time they are deadly against it and even from the state government we are against it.”

On Monday, the three autonomous district councils – KHADC, JHADC and GHADC had reiterated their strong opposition against the inclusion of ‘unrepresented tribe’ and ‘village council’ in the proposed amendment to the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

KHADC chief Titosstarwell Chyne had informed after the meeting that the matter was discussed by the three ADCs after the Centre had yet again sought their views.

“We are totally against implementation of the unrepresented tribe and the state government is also in the same line with us. Regarding the village council issue, we had maintained that instead of this, we propose a village development council,” Chyne had said.
