SHILLONG, JUNE 12: Meghalaya home minister Roshan Warjri said a total of 12 police custodial deaths have taken place in the state in the past five years.  She told the assembly on Thursday,“A total of 12 police custodial deaths have taken place in the state in the past five years from 2009 to 2014.”

According to Warjri only in 2013 there were as many as five police custodial deaths, 3 in 2009, 1 in 2010 and 3 in 2014. Citing the reasons of death, she pointed out that most of the cases is because of suicide.

Replying to a query by NPP legislators James K Sangma, Warjri said, “Most of accused used their “pajamas” to hang themselves inside the lock-ups.”

Earlier, opposition leader Donkupar Roy suggested that the state government needs to conduct a study on the high rate of suicide cases within the lock-ups of the police stations in the state.

On this, Warjri assured the house that the department is concerned over the issue and the study for reasons of the deaths in police custody will be taken up in the right earnest.  She said,  “Consider the number of cases of police custodial deaths, the department is under consideration for installation of CCTVs in the lock-ups of all the police stations across the state.”

According to Warjri, all reports of the magisterial enquiries relating to the incidents have been sent to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).  She also informed that of the 12 cases, disciplinary actions against erring officers were taken in some cases.”- By Our Reporter
