Final accident updates: 31 death, 26 injured

Shillong, August 8: Thirty-one passengers have been reported death and twenty-six of them sustained injuries in the night super bus accident in Sonapur in West Jaintia hill district. The night super bus fell into the deep gorge at around 4.30 am on Wednesday.

The passengers suffering from minor injuries have been given first aid on the spot but those who were serious were immediately sent to nearby hospitals. Eight of the injured have been taken to Silchar Medical College; two were brought to the hospitals in Shillong and Jowai Civil Hospital respectively.

The West Jaintia hills deputy commissioner Abishek Bhagotia told Oh! Meghalaya over the phone, “That the district administration is doing its best to give all the assistance to the unfortunate passengers.”  He informed as the accident took place in a remote area, the district administration is trying to give all the assistance that is possible.”

Bhagotia informed that it will take some time before the district administration gets a profile of the passengers travelling by the night super bus. To a question whether the night super bus was overloaded, he said we will be able to know only after the bus has been retrieved from the gorge.

The night super bus AS -01-0Y- 7399 was heading towards Agartala from Guwahati when it went tumbling down a cliff thirty-four kilometer away from Khliehriat at a place called Sonapur near Lum Shnong.- By Our Reporter
