2 HYC members arrested in arson case

SHILLONG, FEB 17: Two members of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) have been arrested for setting ablaze two vehicles including a government vehicle, last week.

East Khasi Hills superintendent of police, Claudia A Lyngwa on Monday said during the course of investigation two of the miscreants have been identified as Banshanlang Marboh (26) and Henry Kharjahrin (20) and accordingly they have been arrested.

“Both of the arrested accused persons are members of the HYC, Nongthymmai circle and have confessed to their involvement in the case,” she said while adding police are still investigating the case and further arrests are not being rules out.

The two arson incidents had taken place at Langkyrding, Shyiap and Laitlum, Mawlai Mawtawar on February 12, when the Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organization (CoMSO) kicked started its direct action to implement the inner line permit (ILP) in the state.

A government gypsy (ML 01 5716) belonging to Public Works Department (PWD) was torched when it was parked near an international school at Langkyrding, while another Bolero pick up truck (AS 18 C 8797) was also set ablaze at Mawtawar.

The SP said based on eyewitness accounts and CCTV footage, from both the locations, the involvement of miscreants in a bike bearing registration number ML 05K 9946 was confirmed.

“It is to reiterate that HYC is one of the major members of CoMS and the involvement of its members in this appalling act of violence runs contrary to their statted objective of holding a peaceful agitation for implementation of ILP,” Lyngwa said.

According to her, one of the arrested accused Henry Kharjahrin is the first cousin of Robert Kharjahrin, the chairman of CoMSO and the president of HYC.

Stating that these acts have created a feeling of panic and fear among the general public, the SP said the leaders of the CoMSO are directed to refrain their members from any such unlawful activity, as stern action will be initiated against the persons involved.
