DCA minister blames MDCs for instability in ADCs

IMG_20200213_172047SHILLONG, FEB 13: District Council Affairs (DCA) minister Hamletson Dohling has held members of the district council (MDCs) responsible behind the political instability in the three autonomous district councils (ADCs).

“The MDCs are to be blamed for the instability in the ADCs,” Dohling, who took charge of the department following the recent reshuffling of portfolios, told reporters here on Thursday

He said though it is not for the state government to interfere in the formation of the executive committee in these ADCs but it is the duty of the MDCs to be discipline instead of taking advantage of the situation in the absence of the anti-defection law.

“Therefore, I urge all the elected members to restore and maintain the dignity of the ADCs. I would also like to remind that the people are more interested on their works but not on them shifting allegiance from one group to another,” the minister said.

Thanking the chief minister Conrad K Sangma, the People’s Democratic Front (PDF) leader however admitted that it is going to be tough task ahead. “However, I will try to perform to the best of my ability,” he said.

Asked on the financial crisis faced by the ADCs especially in the Jaintia and Garo Hills region, Dohling said that he would soon hold a review meeting with officials of the department to discuss on ways and means to find solution and resolve the issues.

The minister also stressed on the need to have better coordination between the state government and the ADCs. He however refused to comment on the present situation in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, which was recently brought under the Governor’s rule due to alleged political instability.

Dohling said the government is waiting for the order of the Meghalaya High Court in view of the petition filed by the KHADC chief Latiplang Kharkongor, who has challenged the decision to impose the administrator rule.
