200 children among 11,000 people living with HIV in Meghalaya

SHILLONG, DEC 1: Over 11,000 people are living with HIV in Meghalaya, according to the Project Director of Meghalaya AIDS Control Society (MACS) Dr R Allya.

This is as per estimation made by the National Aids Control Organization (NACO), Dr Allya said while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a bike and car rally organized as part of the World AIDS Day in the city on Wednesday.

Stating that there are over 6,000 registered HIV patients with the society, she however said there are still many people who are not aware of their HIV status.

She also asserted that HIV AIDS is over 40 years old and has become a silent pandemic hence it is the duty of each and everyone to create awareness on the danger of this disease.

When asked, Dr Allya said there are more than 200 children who are living with HIV in the state adding “Hence from the MACS we are trying hard to educate people about the danger of HIV through various exercises including like today’s rally.”
