21 more die of COVID-19, toll at 301 in Meghalaya

SHILLONG, MAY 15: The death count in the state due to COVID-19 crossed the 300-mark on Saturday. The disease has claimed 21 lives, the highest in a single day this year, taking the death toll to 301.

Of these, 17 deaths are reported from East Khasi Hills district, 2 from West Jaintia Hills district and 2 from Ri Bhoi district, Director of Health Services (MI) Dr Aman War said.

The state has also recorded 560 more new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours pushing the number of active cases to 4,338.

Dr War said new cases include 359 in East Khasi Hills, 72 West Jaintia Hills, 50 West Garo Hills, 28 Ri Bhoi, 20 West Khasi Hills, 12 South West Garo Hills, 8 North Garo Hills, 8 East Jaintia Hills, 2 South West Khasi Hills and 1 East Garo Hills.

He informed that of 215 patients who have recovered from the viral infection, 144 are from East Khasi Hills, 22 East Garo Hills, 15 West Khasi Hills, 10 West Garo Hills, 7 North Garo Hills, 6 South West Garo Hills, 4 Ri Bhoi, 4 East Jaintia Hills, 2 South West Khasi Hills and 1 West Jaintia Hills.

So far, the state has detected a total of 22,763 COVID-19 cases out of which 4,338 are active cases, 18,124 recovered and 301 deaths.

With 2,449 active COVID-19 cases, East Khasi Hills, that includes state capital Shillong is the worst affected district in the state, followed by Ri Bhoi with 590 cases.

There are 392 cases in West Garo Hills, 267 West Jaintia Hills, 171 East Jaintia Hills, 160South West Garo Hills, 143 West Khasi Hills, 64 South Garo Hills, 43 North Garo Hills, 42 East Garo Hills and 17 South West Khasi Hills.

On the other hand, of the 5,04,687 persons who have tested for COVID-19 in the state as on date, 4,81,924 were tested negative for the virus even as 825 persons are in institutional quarantine and 3,513 under home quarantine.

There are 1,18,108 entrants from outside the state.

28,030 healthcare workers had received the first dose of Covishield vaccine and 19401 had received the second dose, while 73,385 frontline workers got the first shot of the vaccine and 26,407 got the second dose as on Saturday.

Moreover, 2,21,164 persons from among the general public were vaccinated with the first dose and 28,175 were inoculated with the second dose of the vaccine against COVID-19 across the state.
