24 hrs bandh, week blockade

SHILLONG, MAY 25: The proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) on Monday decided to relax the timing of proposed shutdown from 48 hours to 24 hours on May 26, even as it announced a one-week night road blockade from May 27.

“We have decided to reduce the shutdown hours from 48 hours to 24 hours and the bandh will be from 6pm of May 26 to 6pm of May 27,” HNLC publicity secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw said in a statement issued on Monday.

Nongtraw said that the decision was taken respecting the requests made from the students’ community in view of their results as well as daily wage earners and farmers.

Earlier, the outfit has called a 48 hours shutdown from May 26 to May 28, demanding the state government to pass the village administration bills passed by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC).

Meanwhile, the HNLC has also announced a one week night road blockade from May 27 to June 2.

The night road blockade will start from 8pm to 6am for a period of seven days, Nongtraw said while informing that Sunday will be excluded.

Nongtraw informed that ten hours night road blockade will be effective in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills region of the state.

Ambulance services, Mortuary Van, vehicles transporting sick persons, media vehicles shall be exempted from the night road blockade, he said.

The public should strictly adhere to the principles of the shutdown, Nongtraw said adding that anybody going against the shutdown and blockade shall do it at their own risk.- By Our Reporter
