SHILLONG, MAY 24: As the state government has decided to convene a meeting with the two district councils- Khasi Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) on May 27 to resolve the issue emerging out of the pending KHAD (village administration) Bill, 2014, Meghalaya government chief adviser DD Lapang has appealed to the KHNAM vice president Adelbert Nongrum and others to withdraw the ongoing indefinite hunger strike.

Lapang on Sunday claimed that the state government is “serious” to resolve the issue related to the two pending bills on headmen.

Lapang informed that the upcoming meeting will be held to discuss on the two village administration bills proposed by the two ADCs that are pending for approval with the government.

Lapang told reporters, “Since the state government has taken steps and May 27 is not very far off, I request Adelbert Nongrum and all his friends to kindly withdraw the indefinite fast.”

Lapang, who also heads the committee constituted for institutionalize traditional institutions informed that he had contacted the District Council Affairs minister HDR Lyngdoh who informed him that he has called a meeting on May 27 with both the CEMs of the ADCs who have been asked to bring all papers related to tge bills so that the three parties- state government and the two ADCs-can sit across the table to see how far they can minimize the process before taking final decision.

Lapang said that the state government is trying to remove all doubts, omission and commission in the draft bills. In these two bills, there are provisions which conflict with the powers of both central and state, and the state government wants to ensure  the bills do not have conflicts later.

Lapang also assured that the state government  do not intent to take away the powers of the district councils and said it is aware that the ADCs  have got the power to appoint dismiss and to control the headmen and local chiefs.- By Our Reporter
