27 arrested in Pashang mob lynching incident

SHILLONG, MAR 10: Twenty seven persons have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the lynching incident which led to the killing of a youth and severely injuring two others in East Khasi Hills District.

A group of nine youths from Madanrting had gone for a picnic to a tourist spot at Syntung village under Mawkynrew Block on Sunday. However, on their way back, they were suddenly attacked by an angry mob who accused them of being the menshohnoh.

One of three youth who were brutally assaulted by the angry mob succumbed to his injuries. Six others from the group managed to escape to a nearby jungle and were only rescued by police on Monday morning.

The deceased have been identified as Macmillan Kharshandy of Lumbasuk Block A, Madanrting while two others who received head injuries Ricky Dkhar (26) of Lumjingsuk, Madanrting and Teiborlang Kharbyngar (25) of Madanrting were admitted in Shillong civil hospital. The mob also torched vehicle.

Assistant Inspector General of Police (A) GK Iangrai on Tuesday said that a police team contingent was immediately sent yesterday to the area to arrest the culprits involved in the incident.

“The operation was conducted successfully and a total of 27 suspects were arrested,” Iangrai said while informing that two of the suspect were later verified to be a juvenile and a senior citizen respectively and were released at the spot.

Stating that a case has been registered under relevant section of the law, the AIGP said that all efforts are being made to nab the other culprits involved in this heinous crime. He also requested the public not to spread false rumour regarding the incident.

Iangrai said that the boys had gone to Syntung village for a picnic and on their way back they were waylaid by the villagers near Pashang area and were assaulted by them.

He said 3 boys were grievously injured, while the other 6 boys managed to escape into the jungle nearby. The police team after being reinforced, managed to rescue the other 6 boys as well as the injured boys by the early morning hours of Monday, he said.

According to him, 1 of the injured boys succumbed to his injured before reaching Civil Hospital, Shillong.

Earlier, the home minister Lahkmen Rymbui has strongly condemned the lynching incident and assured that the government will ensure all perpetrators of the crime will be punished as per law of the land.
